Samuel Lynne Galleries is pleased to announce the opening reception for Tyler Shields’ exhibition The Color of Impact on Saturday, August 4th, from 5-8pm. The artist will be in attendance at the opening reception, and the exhibition will be on view through September 1, 2018. This exhibition will feature Shields’ new Paint and Masters series, which is a completely new direction technically and conceptually for the artist. A Jacksonville, FL native, Shields has spent the last few decades making a name for himself in Los Angeles, CA, and has become a creative tour de force in the photography and film industries. Shields’ willingness to test boundaries has earned him praise from critics around the world. Often collaborating with celebrities, models, comedians, actors, and trending young Hollywood stars for his provocative projects, Shields’ photographs are iconic, and are making their mark in the history of photography. The images curated for The Color of Impact are quintessential of Shields’ trademark edgy and daring style, but are a separation into techniques previously unexplored by the artist. The Paint series was photographed using a vintage Hasselblad 503CW film camera, and the result is some of the most vibrant color and light possible in the field of photography. Shields explores the raw relationship between movement and color, with an added element of unforeseen outcome; the colors, lighting, and model can all be intentional choices, but ultimately the paint behavior is unplanned, and always surprising. Timing was everything, as the camera takes only one frame at a time without rapid fire. Using a bold process is no new concept for Shields, and the photographs in this collection speak for themselves, each one being a colorful surprise. The images in the Masters series exhibit the power of the portrait throughout history. They are Shields’ ode to some of art history’s most important works, but with an added element of how they may interact within society today. Combining the 2-Dimensional element of the masterwork, with the 3-Dimensional element of live models interposed in the same frame, Shields has opened up a dialogue with the avant-garde. He provides viewers with a renewed experience of iconic artworks. 2018 has been an impressive year for Shields, as he has collaborated on a limited edition merchandise collection with Urban Outfitters, created an evocative documentary with YouTube Red, and two of his photographs have gone to auction at Sotheby’s, where they were featured among photographers like Richard Avedon, Sally Mann and Irving Penn.
